What is Tamarindo known for?
Tamarindo is a busy little beach town on Costa Rica's Pacific coast that primarily draws travelers who are into surfing, the high-energy nightlife and party scene, and wellness activities like meditation, yoga, and Pilates. American and European cultures have a noticeable influence here.
The weather is warm year-round, with a rainy season that runs from May through November, and a dry season from December to April. Tamarindo is located in the Guanacaste province, and it typically stays much drier than more inland and elevated areas, so packing for rainy season here is not too different.
So I noticed that the attire was slightly dressier here than in places like La Fortuna and Monteverde. As far as women's clothes, it was giving more sundresses and short sets and less leggings and hiking boots (which I'd been living in during the previous stops on our Costa Rica road trip without a car).
Packing List for Tamarindo
- Lightweight clothing in natural fabrics like cotton and linen. Think breezy pants, dresses, shorts, and tees or tanks.
- Swimsuits and cover-ups for the beach and pool--don't plan to walk around town in just a bikini!
- Comfortable shoes that you don't mind getting sandy. Sandals with grippy soles because the sidewalks and streets are sometimes uneven.
- Sun protection, including sunscreen, a sun hat, and sunglasses, plus a strap to keep your glasses off the ocean floor.
- Waterproof accessories to keep your belongings safe, like this dry bag for your phone--under $10, and it has worked for me for years!
- Workout gear if you plan to hit a local gym or use the fitness facilities at your lodging.

Tamarindo Essentials
Credit or debit card, as they are widely accepted in Tamarindo, as are United States Dollars (USD). I use and recommend this travel credit card for earning free flights and hotel stays on my everyday purchases!
Hands-free bag like a bum bag or a cross-body to keep your belongings close to you and partake in activities more easily. I don't recommend a backpack unless you plan to wear it on your front to avoid potential pickpockets.
Valid passport, plus a return ticket. If you're visiting from the United States, no visa is required for stays of 180 days or less, but you may be asked to show proof of $100 USD in reserves for every month you plan to stay.
Power bank to keep charged all day while you're away from your accommodation.
Toiletries and cosmetics that you would normally use, except in travel sizes and more heat and humidity-friendly formulations where possible!

Things to Leave at Home
High heels are not the best footwear choice. Even for the bougiest nightclub we went to, most women were wearing flats...maybe a kitten heel or wedge at the most! Unless you're visiting Tamarindo for a formal event like a wedding or business engagement, you probably won't find a sensible opportunity to wear them.
Thick, heavy clothing items in fabrics like canvas, corduroy, or old-school denim will be too hot. You also won't need outerwear except for a packable poncho during rainy season. Many accommodations provide umbrellas--not just all-inclusives--so check with your hotel or Airbnb host ahead of time.

This easy outfit carried me through a full day, from breakfast to the beach and lunch afterward! I just layered it over my bathing suit to double as a cover-up.

You don't need much at Tamarindo Beach, as there are beach clubs, vendors, and facilities; just don't forget your sunscreen because that UV index is no joke!

Ziplining in Tamarindo is a must. There's not too much walking involved, but you will need sturdy, closed-toe shoes like sneakers for safety.
I recommend lightweight clothes that fit close to your body so nothing gets in the way of the harness. And you should definitely take a scrunchie to keep your hair out of your face so nothing gets in the way of the views!
While there are no hiking trails in town, there are plenty of day trip options like this that are a good reason to pack your outdoorsy outfits.
