Planning to visit Oahu by yourself and don't know what to get into beyond going to the beach? I spent a week on the island eating, partying, learning, and, of course, beach bumming, and definitely believe that Oahu is a solo-friendly destination! If you want to bask in the great Hawaiian outdoors, immerse yourself in history and culture, or anything in between, my list of things to do in Oahu solo has you covered.
And if you enjoy this post, you'll love my one-week Oahu itinerary, too!

Oahu Things to Do List

Eat Local Food
Eating your way through Oahu solo is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the island's vibrant culture, especially in and around Honolulu's Chinatown. I couldn't get enough of the fresh seafood, cult-classic malasadas from Leonard's, and tropical fruit with everything.
You can sample everything from loco moco to Japanese-Hawaiian fusion dishes on a surprisingly affordable foodie adventure. If you're looking for unique things to do in Honolulu city without spending a fortune, start with your tastebuds.

Enjoy Oahu Nightlife
Oahu is widely regarded as having the best nightlife of the Hawaiian Islands. And Waikiki's nightlife is solo-friendly and includes a lil bit of everything, from breezy rooftop bars to beachside lounges with live music. I had the time of my life at a drag show at Hula's Bar & Lei Stand.
Try RumFire for a chill vibe next to the ocean or Wang Chung's Karaoke Bar if you're feeling brave enough to sing your heart out in front of strangers. HB Social Club, In Between, and Nextdoor are also highly rated by my fellow travelers, with the latter offering free cover and cheap drinks!

Visit Museums
From Bishop Museum's immersive exhibits to the lesser-known Hawaii Heritage Center, solo museum visits in Oahu are one of my favorite ways to pass time on the island, especially when it's raining.
These cultural gems are great things to do in Honolulu when you want something non-beachy, educational, and even inspiring. Some are small enough for a quick visit before your flight!

Learn to Surf
Taking a solo surf lesson may get you hooked on riding waves. Once you get the hang of it, there's both an adrenaline rush and something spiritual, especially in one of the world's most iconic surfing spots.
If you're nervous, start with this beginner-friendly surf lesson on Waikiki Beach where the waves are gentle (bonus points for a female instructor). This is a must-do for active travelers and easily fits into what to do in Oahu for a week. Plus, you'll feel like that girl once you catch your first wave.

Go to Kualoa Ranch
Kualoa Ranch and Nature Reserve offers some of the most adventurous and epic experiences on the island, from ziplining through Jurassic Park scenery, ATV-ing up lush hillsides, or touring famous filming locations from movies and shows like "Lost."
I found it to be the perfect escape from urban Honolulu, and you don't need a group to enjoy it! I booked the top-rated Raptor Tour as a party of one and had the best time getting dusty and sweaty with a group of strangers turned traveling friends.
Pro Travel Tip
The most popular tours sell out weeks in advance, so don't wait till the last minute to book!

Support Native Hawaiian Culture
One of the most meaningful things you can do solo in Hawaii is learn about and support Native Hawaiian culture--beyond the tourist brochures.
The Polynesian Cultural Center offers engaging experiences, but I also recommend smaller, community-led programs and markets in places like Kailua and Kahuku. In Honolulu, check out Nā Mea Hawai'i for authentic handcrafted items, cultural books, and workshops on lei making, traditional Hawaiian cooking, and more!
In addition to attending cultural events, prioritize supporting native-owned businesses to maximize the positive impact of your trip. As always, be respectful and curious in connecting with the land and its people.

Go Hiking
Oahu has hikes for every level--from a scenic sunrise trek up the iconic Diamond Head to the lush, lesser-known trails of Manoa Valley. As a solo traveler, I visited a mix of well-trafficked tourist and low-key local hikes, and they all delivered excellent views!
Hiking in Oahu provides unparalleled aerial beach views. On the easy end, try Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trail, and if you're a skilled and experienced hiker, check out Kealia Trail.
Whether you're in south Oahu or near Kailua, there's a path that will surprise, challenge, and reward you.

Go Rainbow Spotting
Oahu is known for its frequent, vivid rainbows--especially after brief early morning or late afternoon showers. I kept spotting them while walking solo through Waikiki or driving across the island.
It might sound random or weird, but actively looking for rainbows turned into a kind of grounding practice and a free way to feel joy. The first time I went to the island was just a few weeks after my mom passed away, and she loved all the colors in the rainbow so they felt even more significant to me.
If you're wondering what to do in Oahu solo that's low-key and beautiful, just look up!
Experience a Luau
Attending a luau solo might sound intimidating, but it's a welcoming environment perfect for making friends. The luaus we see depicted in media are often commercialized and cheesy, but if you do your research, you can find one with vibrant performances, delicious food, and deep cultural insight through storytelling.
Especially as a first-timer, look for luaus that honor tradition rather than gimmicks. Travelers looking for intimate and authentic experiences rate Toa Luau.

Take in Street Art
One of my favorite, free things to do in urban Honolulu is wander through Kaka'ako and admire the ever-changing murals from local and international artists. It's colorful, cool, and feels like walking through a live gallery--perfect for snapping solo selfies, too!
If you want to be outdoorsy but not quite in nature, this is an accessible option. Bonus points if you pair it with a food truck or coffee shop stop.

Try Snorkeling
Oahu is a popular snorkeling destination with several areas around the island teeming with colorful underwater scenery, whether you want to check out the Ko Olina lagoons on the Leeward Coast or the Waikiki Marine Life Conservation District.
Hanauma Bay State Park is a protected marine life conservation park with a well-organized entry system and snorkel activities like a catamaran excursion and open ocean swimming with dolphins, but it is kind of touristy.
For a less commercial option, check out Shark's Cove in Pupukea on the North Shore, which is one of the top snorkeling and shore-diving spots in the world. Or book a guided boat tour for more peaceful and intimate water activities.
Take Hula Lessons
As a trained dancer, virtually all forms of movement interest me, but Hula is special. It's a dance, but it's also a sacred storytelling art form. And taking a lesson as a solo traveler is humbling and beautiful.
Many hotels and community centers in Honolulu offer free or low-cost classes open to visitors. If you're looking for things to do in Waikiki during the day, this checks all the boxes.

Visit the Dole Plantation
Yes, it's touristy, but visiting the Dole Plantation can still be fun and surprisingly relaxing, especially early in the day. I enjoyed strolling through the garden maze with a cone of pineapple whip on the way to the North Shore by rental car. It's not an absolute must-do, but it's an easygoing option for your list.

Hit the Beach
Last but not least, you can't visit Oahu and not spend time at the beach. From the calm waves of Waikiki to the stunning sandy shoreline of Lanikai, each spot has its own vibe.
Whether you want something relaxing, active, romantic (yes, even alone), or simply Instagrammable, the beach is always an idea. I've hit up too many Oahu beaches to count for swimming, kayaking, napping, and even beach yoga!
