Hawaii Dress Code Considerations
This island's vibe is laid-back, but don't let that fool you! There are so many things to do on Oahu, including camping, luau dinners, luxury spas, and more. Between volcano hiking in Honolulu, hopping between the North Shore and Waikiki, and dancing the night away (Oahu has the best nightlife of the Hawaiian Islands), you will need a range of options.
In Oahu, the weather is warm year-round, with two main seasons: summer from May to October, and winter from November to April. Temperatures typically range from the mid-60s to the high-80s. I visited in January and found it to be very pleasant. Being from Houston, Texas, the humidity didn't bother me none!
Prioritize clothing made from natural, breathable fabrics and materials. The best outfits for a Hawaii vacation are those that keep you keep your cool while looking chic.
What not to pack for Hawaii: bulky pieces, heavy denim, overly structured clothing like blazers or coats.

What to Wear for a Trip to Oahu
This island's vibe is laid-back, but don't let that fool you! Between hiking in Honolulu, hopping between the North Shore and Waikiki, and dancing the night away (Oahu has the best nightlife of the Hawaiian Islands), you will need a range of options.
Accessories like headwraps, jewelry, and durable bags will make your Hawaii vacation fashion pop without taking up much room in your luggage. I recommend one of your bag options be a waterproof bum bag, fanny pack, or backpack for outdoor activities.
Active Wear or athleisure for hiking in Oahu and physical excursions like ziplining. Breathable, moisture-wicking leggings, biker shorts, and onesies are all great options.
Breezy Dresses, rompers, and co-ord sets for daytime and nighttime. With the relaxed dress code, you could take a good maxi dress from beach brunch to happy hour, but you'd probably sweat it out in between the two.
Flat Shoes, including sandals, sneakers, and hiking boots, will be your best bet. Prioritize shoes with grip that you can mix and match with multiple outfits. I did pack a pair of heels for a sexy dinner, and would recommend wedges over stilettos if you decide to do the same.
Stylish Sun Protection, including sunglasses, tropical hats, and visors. Don't forget a lanyard for your glasses so you don't lose them in the ocean!
Swimwear and Cover-Ups - I recommend at least three swimsuits so you'll always have a dry one in rotation. And cute cover-ups can take you from swimming to lunch.
Oahu's casual style makes a minimal packing list for Hawaii very possible and I didn't even need to check any luggage. Use my tips for traveling with just a carry-on bag if you're traveling light!
Packing Essentials for a Week in Hawaii
Add these warm-weather staples to your Hawaii vacation packing checklist:
Reef-Safe Sunscreen to protect your skin and the environment. I just purchased some locally upon arrival to make sure mine was compliant.
Bug Spray, especially if you plan to do any of the less-traveled hikes. I like to use these bug-repelling stickers.
Handheld Fan or quick-dry towel because it's not a question of if you will sweat, but rather, will you stay fly regardless.
Portable Charger so you can go sightseeing all day without needing to make a hotel pit stop.
Reusable Water Bottle to stay hydrated. Enough said.
Travel Credit Card to earn points on every purchase, from cheap to luxury.
Travel-Sized Beauty and hair products, including your toiletries and skincare, as well as any prescriptions and supplements.
Waterproof Phone Case for middle-of-the-ocean selfies! I use this waterproof phone bag on all my trips, and it hasn't failed me once!

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, you absolutely can. There's no rule against it. However, you probably won't be the most comfortable in jeans due to the climate, which is generally warm and humid.
While not against the law, it's certainly not in good taste to make a costume of Hawaiian culture, including fake leis, grass skirts, and wearing your bikini far from the beach. Aloha shirts may be a lil cheesy, but are not offensive.
