What Makes This Beach Worth Visiting
Black Bay Beach is a natural, black volcanic sand beach in Grenada. The dark color of the sand comes from eroded volcano minerals and the remnants of lava--the pictures just don't do it justice.
The water is warm enough for year-round swimming, and just as crystal clear, clean, and calm as more well-known beaches like Magazine Beach or Grand Anse Beach, so the darkness you see is actually the black sand underneath!
And Black Bay Beach is rustic and secluded, so I had the place to myself when I visited. If you like unique, off-the-beaten-path experiences, this is one of the best beaches in Grenada for that.

How to Get to Black Bay Beach in Grenada
This quiet beach is located on Grenada's western coast in St. John parish, on the Caribbean Sea. Coming from the cruise port or general tourism hub of St. George's, it's a roughly 30-minute drive to the main road in Concord, then a 20-minute hike down to the beach.
The walk down winds through a food forest on the grounds of a colonial-era estate. You'll spot mango, banana, and cocoa trees, as well as sugarcane, and stroll alongside a stream on the way there.
There's no address or signage, so it's best to go to Black Bay Beach with a guide. Read the private Grenada tour itinerary my local guide curated, which included Black Bay Beach!

What You'll Need
Grippy shoes for the hike down. It can get a bit slippery in places, depending on the weather and what trees have fallen or been harvested.
Beach essentials like towels, sunscreen, a bathing suit, and water shoes (I always wear this $20 pair!).
Snacks and bottled water are a good idea since there are no hotels or restaurants nearby this beach.
Beach chairs are optional, but remember that there are no facilities at Black Bay Beach, so if you're opposed to sitting in the sand--which is clean and soft--bring chairs or extra towels.

Black Bay Cave
Another reason I recommend wearing grippy shoes to Black Bay Beach is that you'll need them if you want to see the ancient indigenous cave known as Black Bay Cave.
It's an important part of Grenada's history and one of the few places where you can see petroglyphs from the island's original inhabitants. And the hike up is a bit steep.
