If you've been wondering is Cozumel worth visiting, my answer is yes, but it depends on how you do it. A lot of travelers experience Cozumel on a cruise, step off the cruise port, do one packaged excursion, and head back to the ship without truly seeing the island.
But there are plenty of non-touristy things to do in Cozumel, whether you're visiting solo (like I did), on a couples trip, celebrating a bachelorette trip, or whatever! Here are my favorite Cozumel things to do--based on my personal experience.
And if you enjoy this post, you'll love my Cozumel solo itinerary, too!
10 Things to Do in Cozumel

1. Spend the Day at Punta Sur Ecological Park & Beach
Because it's about 45 minutes from the main hotel zone, this protected park almost feels like it's on a different island. Admission is currently $25 USD for adults ($17 for kids) and includes access to lagoons, wildlife, a lighthouse, and one of the most beautiful beaches in Cozumel. This Punta Sur excursion includes roundtrip transportation and admission!
I picked up a rental car at Cozumel airport, and the drive to Punta Sur was super scenic--the road literally hugs the shoreline at some points.

2. Go Horseback Riding on the Beach at Mr. Sancho's
Mr. Sancho's currently provides the only beach horseback riding experience in Cozumel, and I highly recommend it. We started off in the jungle and ended on the shoreline, followed by access to beach club amenities, including options for parasailing, jet ski rentals, and massages by the water.

3. Go Snorkeling or Diving
Cozumel is a world-famous diving destination, with many people flocking here year-round for these must-do activities.
So there are lots of ways to book, from large group excursions to private tours. El Cielo is popular for its crystal-clear water full of starfish. I stayed at The Westin Cozumel, and the hotel provided complimentary snorkeling gear for the adjoining private beach for a more casual option.

4. Hit the Beach
Cozumel is home to dozens of beautiful beaches! Entrance to most of the beaches on the island's west side is through hotels or beach clubs, which require a purchase. However, Playa Palancar is a truly free public beach where you have the option of partaking in one of the beach clubs or just doing your own thing.
I hit up The Westin's private beach, but found it more suited to diving and kayaking than sunbathing. I also drove out to the east side of the island to Playa Chen Rio, Playa Bonita, and Punta Sur Park for a more low-key vibe--highly recommend!

5. Visit the Archaeological Zone
For an activity that has nothing to do with water, check out a slice of Mayan history at Cozumel's ancient ruins.
The main site is the San Gervasio Archaeological Zone, located in the island's lush jungle. This sacred Mayan ruins complex was once dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of fertility, so it's popular with honeymooning couples, as well as women taking solo vacations.
Compared to other sites I've visited, like the Tulum Mayan Ruins and Templo Mayor in Mexico City, this site felt more intimate, quiet, and uncrowded. It's a meaningful stop that many cruise passengers skip.

6. Eat Authentic Mexican Food
Whether you want a luxury dinner vibe with an ocean view or an off-the-beaten-path taco spot, I've found that Cozumel has it!
One of my favorite experiences was dining at Kondesa Cozumel, so I highly recommend it. Other notable eateries include the Key Lime Pie Factory and Los Sera's.

7. Day Trip to Other Popular Destinations
Cozumel is a great launching point for a day trip to places like Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Chichén Itzá. If you have room in your itinerary for a multi-day jaunt or want to do some island-hopping, I cannot recommend going to Isla Holbox enough!

8. Watch the Sunrise
Drive to the east side of Cozumel for the sunrise. I did this on my last full day in town, and spent the morning at Playa Chen Rio--one of the most peaceful places on the island.
No restaurants or beach clubs will be open that early, but I used one as my reference point on Google Maps, parked, and posted up in the sand.
Because this side of the island is less developed, be mindful of wildlife that might be in your surroundings. There are no big resorts or cruise port congestion on the east side, just natural beauty!

9. Or Watch the Sunset
And on the west side, the sunset was just as gorgeous. For one of the best views, head to a rooftop, like the one at The Westin or Buccano's. I've spent time at both and thoroughly enjoyed.

10. Explore Downtown Cozumel
Is downtown Cozumel worth visiting? Yes. Specifically, for souvenir shopping, cafes and bakeries for breakfast, and the street art.
I chose to walk around during the day without a schedule to take in the colorful murals and buy lil trinkets for my friends and family back home. At night, there are a few bars that come alive if that's what you're after.
Frequently Asked Questions
It's an island, so some things will be more costly compared to a mainland destination like Cancun, but it is absolutely possible to do this trip on a budget.
In my experience, yes. Stick to well-trafficked areas, be mindful of your belongings, and avoid wandering around late at night, just as you would back home.
