About Loíza
Loíza is the cultural heartbeat of Puerto Rico, where Bomba music still echoes through the streets and traditional art breathes life into random corners!
This town of around 30,000 people has withstood hurricanes, colonialism, and economic challenges—yet it still pulses with pride and cultural preservation. It's home ot the largest Black population on the island.
I started my last morning vacationing in Puerto Rico watching the sunrise from Condado Beach, tucked behind our hotel’s pool deck. I’d been waking early all trip, but this was the first time I truly leaned into it—watching the water light up was a serene way to say goodbye to San Juan.
After checking out and stowing my luggage, I grabbed a quick portable breakfast before being picked up for one of the most memorable excursions of the trip: a guided Afro Puerto Rican heritage tour of Loíza.
Getting There: Where is Loíza, Puerto Rico?
Loíza is located on the northeast coast of the island, just past Isla Verde. If you pull up Loíza on Google Maps, you’ll notice that it’s almost hidden in plain sight, just about 20 minutes from San Juan Airport.
This stretch of land hugs the Atlantic Ocean and is known for its tight-knit community of artists, musicians, and craftspeople.
What is There to do in Loíza
Support Local Art
Our first stop was the home and studio of Samuel Lind, an internationally acclaimed Afro-Caribbean artist. Walking through his open-air workshop felt sacred—his work celebrates Black identity, ancestral memory, and the beauty of Loíza’s everyday life.
I picked up two of his prints—one for me and one for my sister—and posed for a portrait.
Pro Travel Tip
If you're into art, this is one of the top Loíza Puerto Rico attractions. Visits are often by appointment, and you’ll want to bring cash or a credit card with mobile signal (electricity and connectivity can be spotty).
Parque Histórico María de la Cruz
Next, we explored the Parque Histórico María de la Cruz, a site that blends cultural preservation with natural beauty. This park marks the location where Taíno artifacts were first discovered in the 1940s, revealing Loíza’s Indigenous roots.
Here, we toured an underground cave monument once used by Puerto Rico's Indigenous people.
If you're wondering what is there to do in Loíza Puerto Rico for adults or with kids, this park tops the list.
Our experience was immersive and energizing, and mosquitoes were all up and through the cave with us! Definitely bring bug spray or lavender oil, especially if you're visiting on a rainy day.
Wear comfortable, breathable clothing--preferably items that cover your limbs as another defense against bugs--and wear closed-toed athletic shoes for hiking the uneven terrain. Our excursion guides provided helmets, but as you can see in the picture above, my afro wouldn't fit inside!
Here's everything you should pack for Puerto Rico, including outfit ideas!

Learn About Puerto Rico's African Heritage
One of my favorite parts of this day trip was participating in a traditional headwrap (turbante) demonstration. This practice reminded me of the Nigerian geles I wear to special celebrations, and the fabrics were reminiscent of Ankara prints. Indeed, this is a carryover from the African ancestors of Afropuertorriqueños.
Another favorite part of the tour was the Bomba y Plena drumming and dance workshop. These distinct but linked traditions also stem from the historic African diaspora community in Puerto Rico, and there's truly nothing like seeing the performers proudly keeping them alive.
Check out El Batey de Los Hermanos Ayala for more in-depth cultural experiences in Loíza. This cultural center celebrates and educates about Loíza's folklore, art, and history.
Relax on the Beach
We also made a stop at Vacia Talega, one of the best beaches in Loíza Puerto Rico, which is tranquil, lesser-known, and not overrun with tourists.
You won’t find beach clubs or resorts here, but that’s the point. It’s untouched—perfect for lounging, reflecting, or getting a middle-of-nowhere aesthetic video for Instagram or TikTok.
Other places to visit in Loíza, Puerto Rico for beach lovers include:
- La Posita – calmer waters, great for families
- Playa Aviones – popular with surfers
- Playa Piñones – a foodie's dream with roadside kiosks (kioskos)

Eat Amazing Food
After soaking up the sea breeze, we stopped at a local spot—one of many restaurants in Loíza Puerto Rico that serve unapologetically traditional food.
I ordered grouper in creole sauce, served with sautéed veggies and sweet plantains. The fish was flaky, flavorful, and perfectly complemented by a panoramic view of Isla Verde Beach.
Whether you're looking for something romantic, on a budget, or straight-up indulgent, Loíza's dining scene hits.

La Iglesia San Patricio
If you're into architecture or religious history, this church is a must-see in Loíza. San Patricio Church is one of Puerto Rico's oldest Catholic parish churches and the oldest active church on the island.
Located in Loíza's main plaza, this is a quick, quiet activity to take in relics and Catholic artwork or have a moment of reflection.

Is Loíza a good vacation spot for solo travelers?
Yes, especially if you're looking for something beyond the resort scene. It's soulful, scenic, and rich with history.
I absolutely recommend visiting Loíza for solo travelers and felt safe the entire time. Loíza isn’t polished—and that’s what makes it such a beautiful change-up from the tourist-centric resort areas of San Juan.
