Climate
You may be thinking about hot weather clothes to wear on vacation in Mexico but Mexico’s climate is diverse. So, depending on which region you’re visiting, you’ll need to outfits for different temperatures and humidity levels.
In the Yucatรกn region, which houses popular beach cities like Cancรบn, Tulum, and Playa de Carmen, it’s hot and humid year round. Along Mexico’s Pacific Coast (home to Los Cabos) the climate is more desert like but also warm to hot throughout the year but more cloudy on the northern end.
But if you’re going to Mexico City, the seasons are more pronounced, while still mild. Think passing rain, chilly mornings, and warm afternoons. In any case, as you think about what to wear on vacation in Mexico, I recommend prioritizing natural fabrics and clothes you will feel comfortable in.
So this post includes outfit ideas with a variety of essentials so you’re covered no matter which part of the country you go to. Let’s get into it!
As a Texas native, Mexico is close by and actually my most frequented country! Be sure to check out all my Mexico destination guides as you plan you trip.
How to Dress for the Pool & Beach
If you’re heading to any of Mexico’s beautiful beach towns, beach vacation outfits must be on your packing list! So let’s start with a few fabulous swimsuit and cover up ideas. Don’t forget sunglasses and sunscreen and a beach bag.
Staying on a big resort? Pack a beach shirt or dress to keep you covered on your trek to the pool or beach. And a beach tote nicely doubles as a personal item for airport travel!
Swimwear shopping on Amazon comes in clutch for ticking off your travel checklist at the last minute but sizing can be tricky. My bikinis and cover-ups shown above came on time AND fit according to their size guides.
Stretch your tropical vacation outfits with transitional pieces like my breezy beach pants that serve as an easy cover up and can be styled with a top.
Take inspiration from those pictures you’ve been drooling over ever since you booked the trip and pack a swimsuit that looks like the ocean! Here are a few similar options all under $50 so you can look cute on a budget:
Or stick to neutral colors to contrast the hues of the sea instead. Packing your Mexico vacation wardrobe around a color palette can make picking outfits very easy and that’s exactly what I did here for Cabo!
My duochrome bathing suit is structured and flattering so I was able to pair it with linen pants to take it beyond the pool! It’s sold out but this one-piece from the same designer checks all the same boxes, too.

Daytime & Resort Mexico Vacation Outfit Ideas
Whether you’re strolling the breezeways at an adults-only resort or biking into town for lunch, here are my best outfits for Mexico vacation comfort and casual cuteness by day!
This cover up is opaque enough to wear around as a dress (or shirt depending on your preference) on a long beach day. Add a pair of printed or colorful sandals for interest.
Here’s my packing list + what to wear in Isla Holbox, Mexico!
This is the same set in two different colors styled differently and I wore the black in Isla Holbox and the white in Tulum. Two piece sets are versatile in that you can mix and match the top and bottom with other pieces to save space in your luggage.

As you might have noticed, I carry my small wooden handbag a lot and not just with Mexico beach vacation outfits. It goes with everything, is affordable, and just the right size for the essentials!
Don’t forget a comfortable pair of sneakers for urban Mexican destinations like the capitol city. I have walked countless miles all over the world in my Stan Smiths and they still look crisp white every time after a lil scrub down!
A men’s button down shirt will be your style BFF for many different destinations but especially Ciudad de Mexico, where the mode of dress is more dressy and the temperatures vary so dressing in layers is key.
You can half tuck it into shorts or pair with a long slip dress like I did for a cool morning in Coyoacรกn. As the day warmed up, I could easily slip it off.

Pack a tie front top for the versatility. You can wear it as a bathing suit cover up (left in Tulum) or an easy top for daytime (right in Cozumel). Neutral colors will go with everything, though, I must admit it was hard not to stain my white with that chamoyada!
Leave room in your suitcase to purchase some local clothing items! You know they will be perfectly designed for the climate of your destination, support local makers, and be unique to anything you can find at home.
I bought this pretty pink top in Isla Holbox and wore it in Cozumel a few months later.
Here’s my Isla Holbox itinerary and what to do in Cozumel!
A cotton or linen shirt dress will keep you cool and feeling put together with very little effort. This black and white ankara dress I wore on a luxury Cabo getaway is custom but below are a few of my favorites you can order online right now.
And I highly recommend packing a pair of woven shoes for Mexico like the raffia mules I’m wearing. They will go with everything!
Me in another crisp white piece of clothing…with another chamoyada! They were simply irresistible. And did you really go on vacation if you didn’t wear linen shorts?
This outfit is chic yet cool and comfortable for lunch or sight-seeing and the colorful statement earrings jazz it up easily.
Check out where to buy chamoyada and all my favorite Cozumel restaurants.
Evening & Nightlife Looks
All you have to do after this is book that beach dinner then show up looking stunning.
The drama of this maxi dress was just perfect for a sunset cruise to see El Arco in Cabo San Lucas. And the matching headband is actually a belt I tied like a scarf. It’s no longer made but I’ve found several spicy options for you below!
You’ll look fabulous in these whether it’s your honeymoon dinner or a girls’ night out.
For a night out in a place like Mexico City, just layer a blazer, leather jacket or sweater over your outfit because it can get cold.
And here’s where to eat when in Mexico City, including some nighttime moves!
But in Cozumel, it’s warm day and night so a sexy dress and sandals are all you’ll need for nightlife!
And here are all my Cozumel outfit ideas + packing list!
I love a colorful maxi dress for dinner because it’s just easy. Here are a few more easy and elegant jumpsuits and dresses for vacation in Mexico:
Outfits for Mexico Vacation Excursions
It’s not all beaches, though, right?! With mountains, ancient ruins, hot springs, and much more, you could be hiking, kayaking or horseback riding while on holiday, too. Here are outfit ideas for those activities.
One of my favorite Mexican excursions to date has been a road trip to Las Grutas de Tolantongo, which I highly recommend penciling into your next trip!
I dressed in layers for a sunrise hot air balloon ride outside Mexico City and it was perfect because I could remove them as the day went on and we toured sunny Teotihuacan.

This sporty romper is under $20! It was the perfect outfit for exploring the Mayan Ruins in Tulum and doubled as my cover up for visiting the secret beach.

What should you not wear in Mexico?
Cute outfits for your Mexico vacation should not be costumes! And cultural appropriation is never in style. You can rock traditional aspects of Mexican fashion such as color, tassels, and embroidery without making a costume of the culture.
As I mentioned, natural fibers will be your best bet in Mexico summer vacation outfits. Avoid lots of synthetic fabrics which trap heat and don’t absorb sweat well. Neither is a good look in heat and humidity.
I hope this Mexico vacation outfit inspiration has you looking and feeling your best on your travels. And sharing is caring so be sure to pin this post for later and follow me over on Pinterest. Thanks for reading!
