I've been traveling solo for 10 years, and much of what Tracee Ellis Ross shares in her new series resonated with me. From how she treats strangers to her approach to packing and traveling in style, so many gems were dropped in just three episodes!
While we wait for more gorgeous destinations (and outfits) in season two, here are the learnings from moments that had me enthusiastically nodding along during season one.
1. Be Meticulous About Your Comfort and Care
Each episode opens with what looks like overpacking to the typical traveler. But, like all the other gems in this article, this one is highly personal and customizable.
I love to travel with just a carry-on bag and personal item whenever possible. Still, I make sure to bring everything I need to feel my best, including this plush sleep mask that allows me to rest on the plane or in those hotels where the blackout curtains don't quite black out.
The message here is to bring what you need to be at your best. It doesn't have to be expensive or obsessive, but it must be uniquely you. No judgement!
2. Pack your Luggage Wisely
Even a first-class traveler like Tracee is not immune to lost or delayed luggage. And we seasoned travelers in all fare classes know to keep our essentials in our carry-on and personal item just in case.
Include your high-value and luxury items like electronics, jewelry, and designer bags or shoes, as well as your key toiletries and at least one change of clothes. And this tip applies to every leg of your trip.

3. Dress for Your Destination and Yourself
One thing about Tracee Ellis Ross that deeply resonates with me beyond the solo trip realm is that she sees dressing as a form of self-expression. And she mentions this on the show, too, saying something along the lines of, "It's like wearing my insides on the outside."
Tracee is known not only for her fashions, but also for the fact that her body is tea. And she's not a stranger to risque looks that celebrate it.
However, when traveling, she leans into the surroundings, the culture, and customs to express herself in ways that honor each destination. Let this be your sign to be thoughtful and have fun with travel fashion.

4. Research Your Destination
On that note, take a page from Tracee's book and devote a bit of time to learning about the place you're going ahead of time.
You don't need to become an expert; however, it's a sign of respect and can only enhance your experience. Then remain open to learning in real time from real people once you arrive.
Besides, how else will you know what to do, where to go, and what to wear?
5. Be Kind to Everyone
Another thing that stood out is that Tracee was intentional about learning the names and stories of the "wonderful human beings" she encountered. It's a refreshingly simple and kind thing to do, but you would be surprised by how many tourists...don't.
The drivers, guides, shopkeepers, etc., we meet during our travels are all people with full lives. And they don't exist to be of service to us. You can learn something from everyone if you're open to doing so.
Real quick, as a content creator, I must add to ask for people's consent before filming them.

6. Support Local Makers
Some of my most favorite things to do in a new place are to try the native cuisine, buy from locally-owned businesses, and get off the beaten path. So all the beautiful shopping and dining Tracee did during episode one in Marrakech, Morocco, was right up my alley.
The best kinds of souvenirs are those that you truly can't find in any other place. They evoke beautiful memories from your trips and give you more vibrant stories to tell.
So, whether it's amazing olive oil from Spain or an authentic Berber rug, leave some room in your luggage!
7. Enjoy Eating Out Alone
Women taking themselves out for a nice meal shouldn't be a big deal, but it still is.
Now, I can't be certain whether Tracee's documented solo meals drew attention because she was alone or because she had a camera crew or because she's Tracee Ellis Ross, but I do know that I have received quizzical looks and questions when dining all around the world all by my lonesome.
Don't let that stop you! Dress up as you would for a date or group dinner with the girls. As one of the other diners said in episode one, be "Brave, party of one!"

8. Treat Yourself
From the beginning of episode one to the end of episode three, we saw plenty of luxury. And solo vacations can be an indulgence in and of themselves.
But if you want to get on Ms. Tracee's wavelength without necessarily spending the same amount of money, find small ways to treat yourself. One way I do this while traveling on a budget is strategically using my travel credit card so that I can splurge on expensive experiences or bougie stays with points!
Try the decadent pastry, ask for the free upgrade at your accommodation, invest in the car service. You deserve.

9. If the Vibes Aren't Right, Pivot
As Tracee said, you can fully lean into your own preferences.
Part of the beauty of traveling solo is that you can build your time around your own desires. And as they change, you can switch up your plans, your environment, etc.
Like when Tracee changed rooms or went shopping two days in a row, or did room service instead of dining out. Do you, boo!
10. Memorialize Your Experiences
So you can look back on your travels with details you might otherwise forget. It doesn't have to be a camera crew, though!
Try old fashioned journaling, video journaling, recording voice notes, and of course, taking photographs.
It was so cool to see Tracee using a suction phone mount and self timer to take some of the stunning travel portraits we've seen on her Instagram. I actually use the same tool, and it comes in handy, not only for taking self portraits but also to mount my phone like a mirror in a pinch.
